Creation Entertainment have announced that Walter Koening can no longer attend STLV this year. Below is the message attached to the announcement.

It was 1979, and we had been producing Creation events for eight years. Although we dabbled a bit in talent from filmed science fiction and fantasy, our focus was still primarily (as it had been from the beginning) on comic books.

That didn’t mean that we weren’t HUGE sci fi TV and film fans, and of course, Star Trek fanatics. We finally decided to book a Star Trek guest for one of our shows, and as history has it, that was Walter Koenig. Then, as now, he came off as ebullient, witty, erudite, and charmingly handsome. 

Chekov, of course, was the iconic character that made him famous. Did Gene Roddenberry envision him as a “Davy Jones of the Monkees” eye candy for the casting? Chekov was typically the foil for comic relief, often taking the fall, getting maimed (this extended into the films, by the way), or generally being trivialized, even though we were ALWAYS on his side.

But he also represented something more important: remember this was America in the '60s during the Cold War. The fact that a Russian worked alongside other crew members (and aliens) and there was no conflict echoed Gene’s determination that the future was politics-free, at least on Earth.

Chekov's son, Anton Chekov, did rise to the role of President in Star Trek: Picard, in a touching tribute that also honored the late Anton Yelchin (a much-loved doppelgänger for Koenig’s canon).

Walter, on the other hand, is an insightful, talented actor, but so much more. He is sharp as a writer, contributing scripts for Land of the Lost and other TV series, and writing a candid and humorous memoir, “Warped Factors,” that offered behind-the-scenes stories from Trek and Hollywood. Beyond that, he is much loved as the notorious Psi Cop Alfred Bester on Babylon 5, one of television's great sci-fi antagonists.

Over the 47-year run of Walter’s appearances at our shows, he:

• ALWAYS entertained our audiences with hysterical stories, energized stage antics, perhaps a little dance, and always a positive attitude.

• Tried to push out into performance material, including several performances with the great actor Mark Leonard (he who played Sarek, Spock’s father). Their two-man play The Boys In Autumnfeaturing the exploits of Tom Sawyer (Walter) and Huckleberry Finn (Mark) delighted our audiences. We still remember the climactic moment when the two of them rolled out on stage in a 1912 Model T roadster!

• Was honest about the challenges in his career, how he had hoped his famous character would grow, and his relationships with the members of Hollywood (the producers, writers, and actors)

We regret that circumstances won't allow Walter to appear at the show next week. He will be SORELY missed on this 60th Anniversary Celebration! But we are GRATEFUL for 47 years of wonderful appearances and the friendship we share with this self-effacing Hollywood legend whom we all love.

Captain's Log, Stardate 67496: The USS Mar del Plata has been requested to conduct negotiations with a ferengi merchant named Wisk, owner of one of the top one hundred most profitable franchises in all of Ferenginar. He is the current owner of a natural satellite. Culturally, moons represent the ultimate achievement for a Ferengi businessman, much like owning a skyscraper or acquiring an island was during humanity's Industrial Age.

Starfleet is interested in establishing an outpost in that moon, including a mining and refinery laboratory, as this natural satellite possesses iridium deposits that could be vital for maintaining ships near this system in the event of an emergency.

Wisk has proven to be the legitimate owner of the moon, recognized as such by nearby alien civilizations, so we have no choice but to respect his property. We assume Wisk does not know the true value of what he owns and merely holds it as a symbol of status and a display of vanity.

Captain Mark Epsilon, Commander Antos, and Security Chief David welcomed him in the transporter room.

"What a polished and pale place!" said the Ferengi, Wisk.

"Greetings," the captain said. "Starfleet is eager to negotiate the placement of a laboratory, along with an outpost, on the moon you own."

"I am glad you are no longer trying to claim sovereignty over something that isn't yours. I would also like to know what this proposed outpost will look like."

"Well, we have some prefabricated spheres in the shuttlebay if you'd like to see them. But first, setting aside our scheduled meeting for a moment, we would like to invite you to a banquet featuring the finest delicacies of Ferenginar straight from our replicator. It would be a pleasure to have you evaluate the authenticity of their flavors."

"Oh! I see you know the 214th Rule of Acquisition quite well!"

"I am not familiar with the Rules of Acquisition."

"So it's a coincidence then? Because the two hundred and fourteenth rule states: 'Never begin a negotiation on an empty stomach.'"

"In that case, I hope your 'stomach' is no longer 'empty' after we eat."

"Well, thank you..." he replied, looking a bit confused.

David found the situation amusing; Commander Antos, not so much.

The four of them made their way to the turbolift while Wisk observed how many women were working on the ship, including Hecate, who was in charge of the transporter room.

"Shuttlebay." the commander ordered inside the turbolift.

"And how many women... 'work' on this ship?" Wisk asked.

"All of them." David replied.

"Very funny. I meant how many human females are on this ship."

"I haven't really counted, but last time I checked the stats, I'd say about 52%. Does that figure interest you for some reason?"

"The truth is, Ferenginar has changed in recent years. It's uncomfortable, though... I'm trying to get used to it. At first, I thought it was just some sexual game made up by the previous Grand Nagus, but it's strange to think they can view life the way men do, socially and profit-wise. Do you understand what I mean?"

"In the past, humanity believed women's sports weren't as interesting as men's. I suppose it was about time we realized otherwise, wouldn't you say?" David remarked.

The turbolift doors opened, and the ferengi merchant sighed.

"I don't think it's that difficult for your kind to go against your customs. You wouldn't understand, is not easy for us."

Inside the capsules, several engineers were working, including the ferengi Narad. Wisk slowly approached her, smiling as he drew himself up straight in front of her.

"Is something wrong, Wisk?" David asked.

"As I told you, Commander, I am trying to get used to seeing clothe…

The title refers to the Valles Marineris (Mariner Valleys) canyon system on Mars, the largest in the Solar System. It stretches across nearly a quarter of the planet, roughly 3870 km (2400 miles) in length, spans 600 km (370 miles) at its widest and goes down 9.3 km (5.8 miles) at its deepest. The system was named after the 1971 Mariner 9 Mars orbiter.

The stardate is 2491.5, about six months after the events of SNW: “New Life and New Civilizations”. Pike says this is their 15th mission in a row. This is the first mention of Tulaxar in lore.

Pike’s affinity for horses dates back to his first appearance in TOS: “The Cage”, and he was seen riding in SNW: “Strange New Worlds” as well as keeping a saddle in his quarters (SNW: “Those Old Scientists”). Another captain who enjoys riding is TNG’s Jean-Luc Picard. The way Pike is speaking about meds and not being discovered makes me think this is an aid mission to a Prime Directive-protected planet.

Spock and La’An began a relationship in SNW: “A Space Adventure Hour”. Una is concerned that Pike is keeping busy to not think about the loss of his lover Marie Batel (“New Life and New Civilizations”).

These are the first mentions of the K’thonia disaster to the FFakisha conflict. S’Sha (as the Vulcan cadet is named in IMDB) says Uhura is “several years older” than she is, but is not clear by how much. Spock entered the Academy at age 19, and Uhura was 22 in Season 2 (“Those Old Scientists”), so I estimate her age to be about 23-24 now, making it around 2263-ish.

Pelia claims she saw a category 10 interstellar squall from inside a “police box”, a reference to the Doctor’s space-time machine, the TARDIS, from the long-running British television series Doctor Who which is permanently stuck in the shape of a British police box from the 1960s. We saw the TARDIS floating in the background near a scavenger ship in SNW: “The Sehlat Who Ate Its Tail”.

Ortega’s console is showing Enterprise moving at Warp 6.25 around the storm.

Scotty says they cannot ignite the warp engines without iridium. In TOS: “Bread and Circuses”, the SS Beagle was in need of iridium after suffering unspecified damage.

The shuttlecraft is named Curie, presumably after Marie Curie, which follows the convention of naming Enterprise shuttles after scientists like Galileo (TOS: “The Galileo Seven”) or Einstein (TOS: “The Doomsday Machine”). The 24th century successor to Curie was attached to Enterprise-D (TNG: “Parallels”).

65 million years in the past would place the ship in the Cretaceous period, the last hurrah of the dinosaurs, and the period to which the Tyrannosaurus Rex belonged. One might ask where the Voth (VOY: “Distant Origin”) are, but the Doctor hypothesised that they descended from hadrosaurs that survived the extinction of the dinosaurs, which means they evolved after the end of the Cretaceous.

The episode attributes the origin of the Valles Marineris to the crash of a Dol’drm ship, the aliens being an insectoid species. The scar on the planet reminds me of what was left by the Xindi probe (ENT: "The Expanse").

La’An carries Augment genetics as a descendant of Khan Noonien Singh (SNW: “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”).

Like Archer did in ENT: "Damage" to an Illyrian ship and a warp coil during the Xindi war, the Martians steal a critical component from Enterprise in service of their war with the Dol'drms, in this case an antimatter fuel cell.

Spock finds a fifth planet between Mars and Jupiter. One of the theories about the origins of the Asteroid Belt are that it was either a planet that never quite formed or the remains of one. I guess the latter is where Star Trek is laying its hat.

The Chicxulub asteroid, named after the Chicxulub Pueblo community on the Yucatan Peninsular where its namesake crater is located, is believed to be the primary cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs. Pelia says she remembers the evolution of humanity, which is another hint to h…

We also have one more guest to announce today: THE legendary 33-inch USS Enterprise model will be joining the Roddenberry team at STLV! This priceless original 1964 proof-of-concept was showcased throughout the opening credits of The Original Series. Built by Richard Datin for the pilot episode "The Cage," it went missing for decades after being loaned out in 1979, but was miraculously recovered in 2024. Now, the Roddenberry family is dedicated to sharing this historic artifact with Trek fans around the world.

We're incredibly excited to announce that, in association with our friends at Factory Entertainment, Hero Within is once again officially licensed to create Star Trek jackets and apparel.

We're grateful to the entire team at Factory Entertainment for believing in us and giving us the opportunity to continue creating products for one of the greatest franchises ever made (and the best fanbase). We're looking forward to working together throughout the coming year and beyond.

Many of you have asked what our future plans were, and we've had to be intentionally vague. The licensing approval process took much longer than any of us anticipated, and we couldn't share details until everything was officially finalized. Thank you for your understanding while we navigated that process.

Now that we're cleared for launch, we're excited to announce that Hero Within will be making our return at San Diego Comic-Con at Booth #1943!

We'll be debuting our Star Trek Collection along with brand-new SDCC exclusives. Admittedly, we're a little behind our usual planning schedule because of the extended licensing process, but we're giving it everything we've got to make this year's convention a memorable one.

And that's especially important because this year marks a major milestone for us...
